Thought Provoking Thursday

Did you know kids really don't want to THINK anymore? I'm not so sure they ever did, because I seem to remember being that way as a student sometimes, but we must learn as we grow up to think for ourselves. I am not sure that anyone can teach you this skill, there just comes a day when the light bulb finally flashes on and our brain begins to be an independent thinkers. Sometimes as parents we may wish that those independent thinkers would listen to some of our advice, but as a teacher I long for more students who are willing to truly THINK! The answers to math problems, like life's problems, are not always handed to us on a silver platter! We must be willing to problem solve, guess and check, and sometimes fail, but ultimately be willing to put our brains to work and THINK! Ok....Enough of that soap box for today!

6th: The quiz from yesterday was returned and we were able to go over the majority of it. We will finish going over the answers tomorrow and do a puzzle with two-step equations for one last review.
7th: We played Percent Jeopardy as a review for tomorrow's TEST in class today. We will have a test on all of percents and the applications of percents tomorrow! STUDY!!
8th -2nd Block: We proved that the volume of a pyramid is 1/3 of the volume of a prism with the same base and height. Ask about my awesome pouring skills!! Students have a HW sheet of word problems to practice their volume and surface area skills.
8th - 4th Block: Today we took and graded a quiz on 2D Formulas and Changing Dimensions. Some students are still struggling to remember the formulas. PLEASE ask your child to see this quiz and work with them if they still need to study the formulas!! We will begin 3D figures tomorrow.

Last Monday in February!!

Can you guys believe how this year is flying?!?!? Next week it will be MARCH! My gracious!

Today---
6th: Today we discussed how to solve two-step equations by working backwards. Students should complete the problems copied from the board for HW. There will be a solving equations quiz on Wednesday.
7th: Today in class we covered yet another application of percentages, tipping! Please encourage your child to calculate the tip the next time you go out to eat together. Students have a HW sheet on sales tax, discounts, markup, and tipping.
8th - 2nd block: Today in class we passed back and reviewed the quiz that was taken on Friday. Many students simply made careless mistakes or still need to study their 2D formulas! Students are encouraged to look back over the Pretest from last week tonight for HW. At this point they should be able to do everything on the pretest. I will answer any questions that students still have from the pretest and we will begin 3D figures tomorrow.
8th - 4th Block: Today in class we passed back and reviewed the quiz that was taken on Friday. Many students still need to study their 2D formulas!!!! Without these formulas you will simply be lost in the rest of our study of geometry! STUDY!!! We went on with a discussion of complex figures and students should complete the evens from practice skills 11.7 for HW.

Are you coming to the Pageant??????

Just to let everyone know who doesn't already know. The Womanless Beauty Pageant being held tomorrow evening at London Elementary school is a fundraiser for our 8th grade AG students who are going to NYC this June. If you haven't gotten your tickets yet, you can still buy tickets  at the door! It is definitely a site that you don't want to miss!!

6th: Today in class we covered solving one step equations. Students have the evens from 20 problems they copied in class for HW. They are encouraged to do the odds as well if they need practice.
7th: Today we talked about the second application of percent that we will cover in 7th grade - percent of change. Many students do not have the business knowledge yet to understand why it is important to be able calculate things like the percent of profit or losses a company has, or the percent of change in enrollment from one year to the next, if you can shed some insight on these topics for your child please talk to them about why percents are important in your life.  HW -8.4 Word Problems (many students finished this in class)
8th: Both 8th grade classes will have quizzes tomorrow.
2nd Block- Quiz on All 2D measurement and Changing Dimensions http://argyll.epsb.ca/jreed/math9/strand3/3108.htm

half-days and snow rot my brian....i think

Ok ok so I haven't even thought about blogin' this week. I'm so sorry!
Here's the update!

6th: This week in 6th grade we have been talking about integers. We have done all operations with integers and today talked about evaluating expressions with the order of operations and using substitution. for more practice on these topics try the sites below.
Integers -
Order of Operations -
Evaluating Expressions -

7th: This week in 7th grade we have covered the basics of percents. Today we talked about using the percent proportion. We will continue with more of this on Monday and have a percents basics quiz on Tuesday.

8th: Both 8th grade classes were overwhelmed with placement tests for high school math classes this week. Due to the snow day, we did not get to cover any new material! We will begin geometry concepts on Monday! Have a great weekend!

Is it summertime???

This weather has been so amazing, my students are itching to go outside and play! Someone please join me in asking God to turn the winter back on for just a few more weeks! I just want one good snow!! :)

6th: Today in class the sixth graders tackled the deep concept of subtracting integers. This is always a topic that takes a while to soak in for some 6th grade students, so don't fret if they come home a little bewildered. We will play some games and do some activities tomorrow with combining integers, both addition and subtraction, these should help their confidence with this concept. Monday we will move to multiplication and division (a much easier concept than subtraction) and Tuesday we will have a quiz on Integers.
7th: TEST Tomorrow on Analyzing Graphs! Today students completed the activity from yesterday and also were given back their graded quizzes to use to study.
8th: Both 8th grade classes took the common assessment on Scale, Indirect Measurement, and Transformations today.

8th Graders need to STUDY Tonight!!

6th: I think the students are really enjoying being able to use the SMART board for our lessons. Today the use of counters on the board made it fun and easy to see a model of our integer problems. We will continue with subtracting integers tomorrow. No HW.
7th: This class also got to use technology more than normal today. Students were able to use the graphing calculators to make box and whisker plots and compare them. We will continue with this activity tomorrow and do test review. The test Friday on Analyzing Graphs will cover all graphs that we have studied this quarter (since the MLK break).
8th: BOTH 8th grade classes have a test tomorrow and should be STUDYING!!!!!!!!

Why do we need negative numbers??

So we understand that it is a loss of yardage when the Patriot's QB gets sacked behind the line of scrimmage!!! OUCH!  If you missed last nights Super bowl, for the record it was the most awesome one since I've been old enough to watch! We might actually be able to say the game was better than the commercials this year!

Ok now for school......
6th: We actually answered the headline question in today's class. We talked about integers and how they might be used in real life. Students should complete the evens on the Integer Basics worksheet for HW.
7th: Today in class we used a formula to figure out if a number truly is an outlier, then applied that knowledge by making a box and whisker plot for each of the ACC women's basketball teams. Quiz on B& W plots tomorrow. HW practice worksheet.
8th-2nd Block: Today we covered rotations and talked about how MC Escher uses transformations in his art. Students should complete the rotations worksheet for HW and check out www.mcescher.com for fun!
