8th Grade -4th Block - NYC 3D Graphs Project Options and Directions

In the Museum on Ellis Island there is a collection of 3-dimensional graphs that show statistics about the immigrants who came through this building in New York harbor to enter the United States.  If you are going to New York this June you will be able to see these graphs for yourself.  For now, we will settle for pictures to give you an example of what you will be doing for the next two weeks of class.  (See pictures on data projector)

For the next two weeks, you will be working to create a 3-dimensional graph using one of the options from the attached page. Your graph must be at least 1 cubic foot in size but can be no larger than 27 cubic feet. You may build your graph out of any material you wish as long as it can be moved once it is completed. Your graph will be graded based on the rubric given in class.

Forgive me!!

For those of you who use this site please forgive me for not keeping up with it lately! Things have been so hectic and I truly have just been feeling yucky. I will try my best for the remainder of the week!

6th: Today 6th graders did not have class due to the field trip. Yesterday they were given back the quiz from Friday and we started the Alice in Wonderland Math and ELA connection problems. These will be a challenge for them but I will try my very best to find time to go over each problem in class. We will complete "Alice" chapter 3 and 4 questions on Thursday. No new material will be covered this week.
7th: Students were given there quizzes back from Friday yesterday in class and were asked to do quiz corrections. Many students did not study for this quiz (excuse: the big voacb test in ELA was the same day) or made very careless mistakes!! Today in class we finished up with an extension of the concept of slope talking about how to use the Slope Intercept form to graph an equation. They have five questions on the worksheet for HW tonight.  We will review tomorrow and have a TEST on Thursday on Functions and Slope.
8th -2nd Block: Today in class I passed back Test from yesterday and students were given a new project. See the next post for more information.
8th -4th Block: Students were given back all of the work that had been turned in and graded. We went back over a quiz that they took on Friday and reviewed all Data Analysis info. This class will have a common assessment on Data Analysis tomorrow! STUDY!

The Band was Slammin'!!

Awesome job last night band members! We loved it!

6th: Today in class we began talking about compound probabilities. We took notes and will practice this concept more tomorrow. Remember that some of you still need to stay after school to finish your posters!
7th: Today in class we continued with the concept of slope learning how to find slope from two points and from a table. We will talk about how to find slope from an equation tomorrow and have a quiz on Slope on Friday.
8th - 2nd Block: Shaving Cream anyone?
8th -4th Block: Today in class we did an activity with the TV program Numb3rs. We discussed how scatter plots can be used to make predictions in real life settings. We will have a quiz on scatter plots on Friday.

Good Luck Band!!

6th: Today we did not have class due to county wide writing test!
7th: Today in class we began the concept of slope. Students will continue learning about slope this week and have a quiz Friday. Tonight students have a HW worksheet, but most of them finished it in class.
8th -2nd Block: Shortened class due to writing test, continue with peer teaching groups tomorrow.
8th- 4th Block: Students continued talked about the concept of scatter plot correlations today and how to use a scatter plot to make predictions. We will do a hands on activity with scatter plots tomorrow and have a quiz on this on Friday.

Hope to see everyone out at the band concert tonight!

Only 9 more days.....

It'll be here before we know it!  Until then, on with the learning!

6th: Today in class we took a quiz on Tree Diagrams and the Fundamental Counting Principle. You will get those back Wednesday. No class tomorrow due to the writing test.
7th: Today in class I passed back and went over the quiz on Graphing Functions from Friday. We will finish up functions this week and take a test next Wednesday or Thursday before Christmas break!
8th -2nd Block: Students continued to teach their peers data analysis. Test Friday!
8th -4th Block: Today we talked about Scatter plots and their correlations. Ask your child to explain the difference between scatter plots with positive, negative, and no correlation. We will continue talking about correlations tomorrow.

Did someone say SNOW!?!?!??

Ok Ok so it was only flurries...but BOY do I wish we could have about 3 feet!
Oh well, until then, we'll go ahead with school....
6th: Today in class we watched 2 short video clips from www.thefutureschannel.com about how Barbie and Hotwheel designers might use the math we have been learning in class. Students were then given an assignment to create a poster size tree diagram with either Barbie outfit options or with Hotwheel car design options. They will also include on the poster how this process can be shortened by using the Fundamental Counting Principle. We will complete the project in class tomorrow and have a quiz on the topics on Friday. No HW tonight!
7th: Today in class students were given a quiz on the coordinate plane and plotting points. After the quiz we discussed how you can work backwards to convert from a given graph into an equation. We will touch more on this subject tomorrow, no HW tonight.
8th - 2nd Block: Today in class students began to teach data analysis. "How to determine between fair and biased questions" and "How to determine if data was collected fairly and is credible" were the topics covered. Student will continue to lead the class for the next week.
8th - 4th Block: Today in class we continued to look at how to interpret data from a graph. We will wrap up this discussion tomorrow by talking about how to make predictions from a given graph. We will have a quiz on Interpreting Data from a Graph on Friday.

Tuesday goes from Terrible to Terrffic!

This morning when I came to school I was really having a bad morning and simply wanted to crawl back into bed. I'm sure we've all had those days, right? But then as my students came, things started to get better. My 7th graders totally, brought me out of the fog and made my day a great one! Thanks guys!!

6th: Today we talked about how tree diagrams can be a useful tool when you are trying to list all outcomes for a particular event or set of events. We then moved into how the Fundamental Counting Principle is a short cut method for finding the number of outcomes and can be very useful especially when you have a large amount of choices. Students should complete Word Problems worksheets 9.2 and 9.3 for HW.
7th: Today in class we did another review of the coordinate plane and how to plot points. We will have a QUIZ tomorrow on this information. We also discussed how to transform a function rule into the graph of a function and took notes on the steps. Students should do Study Guide 4.6 for HW.
8th - 2nd Block: Today in class students turned in their lesson plans. They will begin teaching tomorrow.
8th - 4th Block: Today in class we began talking about interpreting data from graphs. We will cover Bar Graphs, Circle Graphs, Histograms and Scatterplots this week.

Another Monday......

Today I was only here for 1st block as I went on a field trip with the 8th graders.
6th: Today in class we covered "Finding a Sample Space using a Tree Diagram". Students are to complete p435 #3-6 for HW and check the odds in the back of the book. We will go over this homework in class tomorrow. Students also received their quiz grades from Friday and any test correction grades were passed back. All missing work needs to be turned in by Wednesday as Progress Reports go home Thursday!
7th: Today you spent the day with Mr. Capizzani and were supposed to watch a Brainpop about the Coordinate plane then complete a practice plotting points activity. If you did not complete your graph in class please finish it for homework!
8th: No Class Field Trip! 2nd Block, Lesson Plans due Tomorrow!!!!
