Lots and Lots to do.......

Does anyone else find this time of year to be exceptionally busy? I feel like I'm drowning in piles of paperwork!!! HELP!!

6th: Today we reviewed from the last two days with Theoretical and Experimental Probability. Students were able to check over answers on turned in HW and ask questions if needed. We also discussed in depth the activity that was completed in class yesterday and did the same activity again using the TI-83 graphing calculator's "Probability Simulation" application. I think the students really thought the calculators were neat and enjoyed being able to "play" with them a little while still learning the concept they needed to know. Tomorrow we will do centers on Theoretical and Experimental Probability and we will have a quiz on Friday.
7th: Today in class we discussed how functional relationships can be written in Table form. We talked about how sometimes there are many ways to represent the same information and how English has a kind way of giving the exact same thing lots of different names. Students had to take quite a bit of notes and terminology today, but will be given the opportunity to work a little more hands on tomorrow.
8th -2nd Block: Group Teaching Data Analysis Project
8th -4th Block: Today in class we discussed how to appropriately display data. Students were given a study sheet on 5 important types of graphs and their uses. They will need to study this information as well as the info from the beginning of the week for a quiz tomorrow!

Did someone say there are only 18 more school days till Christmas break??????

Good! That's 15 more days I can cover probability with my 6th graders (they have a field trip one day and writing test another), 17 more days to cover data analysis with my 8th graders (they have a field trip one day too), and 18 glorious days (unless I find out they are going somewhere too) to cover Functions and Graphing with my 7th graders!! :)

Today in class....
6th: We covered Basic Experimental Probability and did an experiment ourselves rolling dice to see what the outcomes would be. We will talk more about and compare theoretical and experimental probability tomorrow. No HW.
7th: Today in class we did a practice sheet with writing function rules (equations that relate two variables) from real life situations. This is something that takes a lot of practice and thought, but most students did very well with it. We will talk about representing functions as tables tomorrow.
8th-2nd Block: Groups worked together to plan for peer teaching data analysis. Groups will begin teaching on the 5th.
8th - 4th Block: We took guided notes on "How can I be assured that data I use is collected fairly and is credible?" We discussed fair and biased questions and the importance of taking a random sample. Tomorrow we will discuss how to appropriately display data.

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone had a Great Thanksgiving! I did, and now I'm counting down till Christmas! After this nice long break, we are back in action today with every class starting new material.
6th: Test Papers from Friday were returned! Students who need to stay for test corrections will need to stay this Friday after school!! Today we covered an introduction to basic theoretical probability. We did p430 #4-10 in class and then #12-32 even was assigned for HW. We will cover experimental probability tomorrow and compare the two as the week goes on.
7thTest Papers from Friday were returned! Students who need to stay for test corrections will need to stay this Friday after school!!  Today in class we reviewed the definition of a Function and How Functions can be represented using an equation, table, and graph. We will continue this topic this week. No homework tonight!
8th-2nd Block: Introduction to data analysis and discussed group teaching project. Groups and topics were chosen. More info to come tomorrow!
8th-4th Block: Introduction to data analysis. We talked about what data is and why we might need to analyze all types of data in real life. No homework. We will dive right into data tomorrow!

I'm thankful for you!!

Most of the time when I write these blogs I think no one is really reading them anyways and why do I waste my time, but then I'll hear from a desperate mother or child talking about how glad they were that this blog was there and I feel a little better. So for those of you who are actually taking your time to read this....I'm thankful for you!

Today in class....
6th and 7th: TEST!!! Results after the break, don't sweat it, but please do the extra credit tomorrow :)
8th -2nd Block: While some were out computer testing the others of us completed a brownie equation activity.
8th - 4th Block: We had an exciting discussion about why we should be thankful for our brains and for education and how a lack of education limits you. We also talked about how Americans in general have a distain for intellectualism and how many teens today think it's cooler to be uneducated than to be a "nerd". The class was challenged to think for themselves, not just conform to the thoughts of others.

Tomorrow I will be out of class, students will have an in class extra credit assignment. Everyone have a great Thanksgiving!!!!

Super Short Week!

With only two full days of class this week, my blogs will be short and sweet.
6th: Today in class we did a review for tomorrow's test using the CPS "clickers". It's sort of a Jeopardy game with remote controls, ask your students about how cool it is!!!  Study for tomorrow's TEST!!
7th: Today in class we completed the review worksheet that was started on Friday and also went over the correct answers. Students were also able to work in centers to review for tomorrow's test. STUDY!!
8th - 2nd Block: The majority of students were computer testing today, so no new material was covered. Test grades were passed back. Test corrections tomorrow.
8th - 4th Block: Today students were given back tests grades and well as current quarter grades. Students are encouraged to stay tomorrow after school for test corrections if needed! In the spirit of Thanksgiving yummies, we also did an activity with equations and a brownie recipe.

Testing what you know....

Both 8th grade classes had a test yesterday. Graded tests will be passed back on Monday and test corrections will be held on Tuesday afternoon this week because of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday!  Wednesday will be a half day and I thought that if we waited until the next Friday, it may be hard for students to remember the info.
6th and 7th grade classes will have a test Tuesday. Please let me know if your family is leaving early for Thanksgiving, you will need to take this test BEFORE you leave. If you wait till after the break, you may forget some things. We will review in class Monday. I will post some review sites below for each grade level. Test corrections for these tests will be the Friday afternoon of the following week if needed.

So.....Study!!!

Did you know we have a long weekend coming??

I've probably been asked that question 12 times today (as if you think I DON"T realize it!!) Most of the students around here are excited that we have this coming Monday out of school, and another long weekend, but for some reason they are acting as if the weekend is already here. Ok, folks we still have two more days of school before your little break, hang with me!!

6th: Today in class we practiced solving proportions. We will apply this more to real life problems tomorrow and have a quiz Friday!
7th: Today in class we went over HW and then took a quiz on Translating English to Math. We will not have class tomorrow due to the Field Trip, however I will see you again on Friday!! You will get your quiz grades back then!
8th -2nd block: It was announced that there would be a quiz today, however after realizing that many of the students in class were absent today and after going over HW and seeing the short amount of time remaining we decided to postpone the quiz until tomorrow! STUDY!!
8th -4th block: Today in class there was a quiz on Two-Step Equations. Tomorrow, you will receive the grades back from these quizzes and we will talk about how to solve equations using Guess-n-Check when you are given multiple choices. We will begin writing equations from word problems on Friday.

Fresh Start!!

We are now off and rolling on the 2nd Quarter of school. Can you believe it? If we blink our eyes it will be Christmas. This new quarter is a great chance for everyone to have a fresh start and review our expectations for this class. I have posted them on the right side of this blog for those of you who can't find your yellow sheet from the beginning of school! Please take time at home to review them as well.

6th: Today in class we covered a load of new material in a short time, we will be discussing it more as the week goes on. We talked about ratios, rates, and unit rates. Students have HW on page 382 in thier textbook #12-23 and 26-28. They are allowed to check the odds in the back after they have completed it. Tomorrow we will look at how unit rates are used in comparative shopping, then move into using proportions.
7th: Today in class in we played a game to see how many Key Words we could come up with that mean add, subtract, multiply, divide, and equal. Students do not have HW but will have a Quiz Wednesday. Tomorrow we will apply today's lesson by writing english sentances in algebraic form.
8th - 2nd Block: Today in class we did guided notes on Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides. Students were to complete the three practice problems on the back of that sheet for HW. We will cover solving inequalities with variable on both sides tomorrow then have a quiz Wednesday. Check back later tonight or tomorrow for some good study links.
8th - 4th Block: Today in class we talked about how solving two-step equations in related to a fight. Ask you students to show you how to solve a a two-step equation using the "Fight the Variable" method. :) HW is 10.2 SG worksheet #1-6 and #10-13. We will discuss these problems and then begin to solve two-step inequalities tomorrow.  We will have a quiz on this material Wednesday.  Check back later tonight or tomorrow for some good study links.
